Funny Girl is based on incidents in the life of Ziegfeld Follies leading lady, Fanny Brice shortly before, during and after World War I and tells her rise from being an uncomfortable, unattractive, stage-struck young girl to national stardom. Her tale begins with her young days in New York's Lower East Side, where the teenager goofs her way through burlesque and vaudeville, dreaming of making it big despite being put down by her friends and family, who tell her she isn't star material enough for the stage. It also covers the story of her love for and subsequent failed union to Nick Arnstein, an elegant, sophisticated man whose allure Fanny finds irresistible. The show is full of the epic music that anyone would come to expect from a show of this quality and included are several show-stopping numbers such as "People" and "Don't Let It Rain on My Parade".
