The central character, Fanny Brice, is fantastic even though she is not meant to be the attractive type, at least not according to her family and friends. She is blessed with a gorgeous singing voice, a quick wit, great personality, and eyes that can penetrate your very soul. She's certainly out of the ordinary.
Her tale starts as a young, brave performer on the Lower East Side of New York City, working through the worlds of burlesque and vaudeville. Fanny is a stunning singer with a clever mind who has faith in herself despite the cynicism of her loved ones.
As the story unfolds, Fanny is instantly taken with Nick Arnstein, a classy gambler with a tender side. Nick, however, seems unable to figure out that Fanny has fallen for him, as shown by his frequent absences that she assumes to be "business trips."
Eventually, during a passionate night in Baltimore, Nick and Fanny tell each other their feelings for one another, and Fanny confidently decides to travel across the ocean to be with Nick. Due to a windfall won by Nick, the two decide to get married. Fanny's husband is starting to get increasingly jealous of her success in the entertainment industry, and so she must now, especially with a favorable career path as a entertainer choose between her work and their relationship.
