The narrative of beloved comedienne Fanny Brice starts with her irrepressible youth in New York's Lower East Side, where the stage-struck teen tumbles her way through burlesque and vaudeville with dreams of making it big despite being put down by her friends and neighbors, who tell her that she isn't pretty enough for the spotlight. Fanny, who has a strong voice and enormous ambition, knows better. When Fanny first meets Nick Arnstein, a pleasing and attractive gambler with a soft side, she falls in love right away. The celebrity status she has always desired is now within arm's length as she awaits her opportunity in the Ziegfeld Follies. Her only problem is that Nick Arnstein, is unaware of her feelings and on a regular basis leaves town on "business" trips. Nick and Fanny eventually admit their feelings for one another after a fiery encounter in Baltimore, and Fanny courageously leaves the Follies to run after Nick across the ocean. A bankroll is won by Nick, and the newly wealthy couple gets married. However, no honeymoon lasts forever, and Fanny must decide whether to go after her brilliant show business career, which she loves, or live with her beloved husband, who is growing increasingly jealous of her success.
