The narrative of loved comedienne Fanny Brice begins with her irrepressible youth in New York's Lower East Side, where the stage-struck teen clowns her way through burlesque and vaudeville with dreams of making it big despite the discouragement of her friends and neighbors, who tell her that she isn't pretty enough for the stage. Fanny, who has a strong voice and enormous drive, knows better. When Fanny first meets Nick Arnstein, a charming and attractive gambler with a soft heart, she falls in love right away. The celebrity status she has always wanted is now within her reach as she awaits her chance in the Ziegfeld Follies. Her only hindered is that Nick Arnstein, is unaware of her feelings and on a regular basis leaves town on "business" trips. Nick and Fanny finally admit their feelings for one another after a fiery encounter in Baltimore, and Fanny courageously leaves the Follies to chase Nick across the ocean. A bankroll is won by Nick, and the newly wealthy couple gets hitched. However, no honeymoon lasts forever, and Fanny must decide whether to go after her brilliant show business career, which she loves, or live with her beloved husband, who is growing increasingly jealous of her success.
