Funny Girl is based on incidents in the life of Ziegfeld Follies leading lady, Fanny Brice shortly before, during and after World War I and chronicles her rise from being an delicate, unattractive, stage-struck young girl to national stardom. Her story begins with her young days in New York's Lower East Side, where the young starlet in the making goofs her way through burlesque and vaudeville, wanting to make it big despite the discouragement of her friends and family, who tell her she isn't star material enough for the stage. Additionally, it covers the story of her love for and subsequent failed union to Nick Arnstein, a charming, sophisticated man whose allure Fanny finds attractive. The musical is full of the awesome music that anyone would come to expect from a show of this caliber and included are several show-stopping numbers such as "People" and "Don't Let It Rain on My Parade".
