The main character, Fanny Brice, is not meant to be "pretty," but she shines with undoubted brilliance. Her voice, wit, stylish charms, elegant hands, and eyes that pierce with burning stares through the soul are nothing short of legendary.
Her story begins when she is a young, gutsy performer on the Lower East Side of New York City, blundering through the worlds of burlesque and vaudeville in the cusp of her epic journey. Fanny is a brilliant and gifted young woman who sings with grace, has high goals, and is confident in her own capacity to achieve them despite the doubts of her family and friends.
Fanny's heart is instantly taken by Nick Arnstein, a attractive gambler with a sensitive side. Nick, however, fails to understand her feelings and frequently disappears on what she assumes to be "business" trips. Nick and Fanny have a ardent encounter in Baltimore, during which they both admit their feelings for one another, and Fanny courageously decides to travel across the ocean to be with Nick. Nick's win of a substantial sum of money led to the couple's decision to tie the knot.
