Funny Girl is based on events in the life of Ziegfeld Follies personality, Fanny Brice shortly before, during and after World War I and tells her rise from being an awkward, unattractive, stage-struck teenager to national stardom. Her tale begins with her young days in New York's Lower East Side, where the young girl bungles her way through burlesque and vaudeville, wanting to make it big despite the discouragement of her friends and family, who tell her she isn't pretty enough for the stage. It also covers the story of her love for and subsequent failed marriage to Nick Arnstein, a charming, man about town whose allure Fanny finds seductive. The musical is full of the spectacular music that anyone would come to expect from a show of this level and included are several show-stopping numbers such as "People" and "Don't Let It Rain on My Parade".
