Funny Girl is based on incidents in the life of Ziegfeld Follies leading lady, Fanny Brice shortly before, during and after World War I and tells her rise from being an awkward, unattractive, stage-struck young girl to national stardom. Her story starts with her young days in New York's Lower East Side, where the young girl bungles her way through burlesque and vaudeville, wanting to make it big despite being put down by her friends and family, who tell her she isn't beautiful enough for the stage. Additionally, it covers the story of her love for and subsequent failed marriage to Nick Arnstein, an elegant, sophisticated man whose allure Fanny finds irresistible. The theater production is full of the astounding music that anyone would come to expect from a show of this quality and included are several show-stopping numbers such as "People" and "Don't Let It Rain on My Parade".
