The narrative of loved comedienne Fanny Brice begins with her irrepressible youth in New York's Lower East Side, where the stage-struck teen fumbles her way through burlesque and vaudeville with hopes of making it big despite being put down by her friends and neighbors, who tell her that she isn't beautiful enough for the stage. Fanny, who has a powerful voice and enormous ambition, knows better. When Fanny first meets Nick Arnstein, a pleasing and attractive gambler with a soft heart, she falls in love right away. The fame she has always wanted is now within arm's length as she awaits her opportunity in the Ziegfeld Follies. Her only problem is that Nick Arnstein, is unaware of her feelings and frequently leaves town on "business" trips. Nick and Fanny in time admit their feelings for one another after a fiery encounter in Baltimore, and Fanny daringly leaves the Follies to pursue Nick across the ocean. A bankroll is won by Nick, and the newly wealthy couple gets married. However, no honeymoon lasts forever, and Fanny must decide whether to go after her brilliant show business career, which she loves, or live with her beloved husband, who is growing increasingly jealous of her success.
