Fanny Brice's trip from being a tender, uninspired, stage-shy young teen to becoming a national star is recounted in the theater show, Funny Girl. It is based on the happenings in her life that occurred just before, during, and after World War I. Her tale begins in her early years in the Lower East Side of New York City, where the young teenager bungles her way through burlesque and vaudeville while hoping to succeed despite being discouraged by her family and friends who say she isn't beautiful enough to be a star on stage. It also tells the story of her relationship with Nick Arnstein, a charming local whose allure Fanny finds fetching, as well as the eventual failure of their marriage.
